here is something for u to know about dengue fever:
Dengue fever is a viral infection that usually starts suddenly with a high fever, rashes, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, as well as muscle and joint pains. The severity of the joint pain has given dengue the name, "break-bone fever." Nausea feeling, vomiting, and loss of appetite are other common symptoms. A rash usually appears three to four days after the start of the fever. The illness can last up to ten days, but complete recovery can take as long as a month.
How to help prevent dengue fever:
- Empty or remove sources of standing water, such as roof gutters, plastic containers, buckets, used tires, flower pots and cans.
- Clean pet watering containers and flower vases at least once a week.
- Remove discarded bulky items that may collect water, including abandoned cars, boats and sheds.
- Check screen doors and windows for holes or tears.
- Plants that collect water should be sprayed weekly with a garden insecticide.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to limit exposure.
- Use indoor insecticides and repellents if mosquitoes are in the home.
- Apply effective repellents on exposed skin and clothing.
- If a home has a water catchment tank, be sure it is "mosquito proof."
- If appropriate, use air conditioners when indoors.
- Use mosquito coils and electric vapour mats during the daytime to prevent dengue.
- Use mosquito nets to protect babies, old people and others who may rest during the day. The effectiveness of such nets can be improved by treating them with permethrin (pyrethroid insecticide). curtains (cloth of bamboo) can also be treated with insecticide and hung at windows or doorways, to repel or kill mosquitoes
- Break the cycle of mosquito-human-mosquito infection. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite people who are sick with dengue. Mosquito nets and mosquito coils will effectively prevent more mosquitoes from biting sick people and help stop the spread of dengue.
